Continuation courses

After completing the Introductory Course in Practical Philosophy, you are invited to continue your adventure with a Foundation Course in Practical Philosophy which explores a range of themes in greater depth. Each theme is offered as a single term course unit.
The course is divided into two phases which together provide a solid foundation in practical philosophy.

FOUNDATION COURSE in Practical Philosophy

ENTRY LEVEL

The entry level units of the Foundation Course can be taken in any order. The only prerequisite for attending any of these course units is completion of the Introductory Course.

FOUNDATION PHASE TWO

The Phase Two course units are designed to be taken in order. A minimum of two of the entry level course units must be completed before commencing Phase Two of the Foundation Course.

HAPPINESS

The Happiness unit of the Foundation Course in Practical Philosophy is offered to all students who have completed the Introductory Course. This unit explores the nature of true Happiness and real contentment and expands on the ideas and practices from the Introductory Course including:

• The practice of ‘The Exercise’
• The need to be in the present
• Wisdom and Attention

…this unit also introduces other concepts such as:

• True Happiness and pleasure
• True Happiness and time
• True Happiness and self esteem

…and it asks some important questions that include:

• Is true Happiness natural?
• How do we acquire it and how is it lost?
• Can you find Happiness in work?

…this unit also explores related philosophical ideas of:

• Plato
• Marsilio Ficino
• Lao Tzu

LOVE

The Love unit of the Foundation Course in Practical Philosophy is offered to all students who have completed the Introductory Course. This unit explores the nature of pure Love and expands on the ideas and practices from the Introductory Course including:

• The practice of ‘The Exercise’
• The need to be in the present.
• The relationships between Wisdom, Knowledge and Love

…this unit also expands on other concepts such as:

• Love and Reason
• Unity and duality
• Gratitude and Harmony

…and it asks some important questions which include:

• What is Love?
• How is it gained and how is it lost?
• What it is that is loved?

This unit also explores related philosophical ideas of:

• Rumi
• Shakespeare
• Marcus Aurelius

INTERMEDIATE ONLINE COURSE

This course has been developed for continuing students in any location – Australia and worldwide – who find they are unable to physically attend a group at the School of Philosophy. Students wishing to enrol in the Intermediate Online Course should have been attending the School for a number of years and be practising meditation (or wanting to resume it as a regular practice).

The course will run for 12 weeks at a time. Students wishing to enrol for this course should initially contact info@philosophy.org.au to confirm their eligibility. You will need video/audio capability (webcam/microphone or headset), and moderate system requirements apply. Orientation will be provided upon enrolment.
